Hamish in the Study
101cm x 101cm (40”x40”in)
Acrylic on canvas
Framed in Tasmanian Oak
Part of a new series (within a series)—-Bush-Wah-Zee: Nocturna
This little guy has my whole heart- I have always loved owls, and the Boobooks of Australia are the sweetest little ones. The colour palette is notably more subdued than many of my parrots, suiting Hamish just fine- a slightly quieter vibe for a quieter guy. The color is still present, popping through in gum blossoms, banksia and the fun little detailed addition of a few multi-tonal harlequin beetles tooling around the leaves and branches in this nighttime scene. I’ve only ever painted one other owl (a barn owl for a commission that I LOVED), so it was a fun challenge and change of pace to see how owl feathers are laid out, spreading out around the eye and facial disc. Lots of tiny brushes and strokenscti complete this look, but pretty cool stuff for a bird nerd.🤓
